Guidelines for Inland Surface Water Quality (G.N. No 188 of 1998).

These Guidelines of the Ministry of Local Government and the Environment aim at preserving the quality of water of rivers, watercourses, streams, lakes, ponds, dams or reservoirs (“inland surface waters”) for the conservation of aquatic life. The guidelines set out parameters regarding presence of foreign substances in such waters. The Guidelines shall not apply to groundwater, water contained in any sewer, sewage disposal works, private drain or private reservoir used for irrigation purposes, water in any privately owned containers and sea water.
