Abstract
Based on the importance of energy in the context of economic development and environmental sustainability, this Long-Term Energy Strategy represents a roadmap for the development of the energy sector up to year 2025 and for improving energy efficiency, addressing environmental and climate changes and modernising the country's energy infrastructure, in order to meet the challenges ahead. The Strategy focuses on: innovation through science driven development of new technologies; energy security, diversity, efficiency through the development of economically competitive fuels and technologies, including bold initiatives in renewable such as wind and solar energy; diversification of energy supply towards alternate sources. The Strategy defines and develops several initiatives, in order to enhance its implementation: use of renewable sources of energy for electricity supply; establishing training and capacity building in collaboration with tertiary institutions and development partners in fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency; promoting the concept of energy management and use of energy savings devices; improving standards of energy utilisation in buildings; strengthening appropriate training to build capacity and to develop a culture of sustainable development including energy efficiency and energy conservation; promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions in the tourism sector; implementing new sites for hydropower plants; development of projects for the exploitation of sea water; increasing investment in sugar cane industry, to improve contribution of bagasse based electricity; introducing environmental and social subsidies; promoting integration of energy strategy and gender issues, for sustainable development and poverty reduction.
