Abstract
This Maurice Ile Durable (MID) is a comprehensive initiative aimed at achieving sustainable development in Mauritius by integrating environmental, economic, and social factors, emphasising the importance of collaboration among various sectors to ensure a sustainable development for the nation. The Maurice Ile Durable focuses on five key pillars: Energy, Environment, Employment, Education, and Equity, with targeted goals for each of them: ensuring that the Republic of Mauritius is an efficient user of energy, with its economy decoupled from fossil fuel; ensuring sound environmental management and sustainability of the country's ecosystem services; increasing green economy with decent jobs; promoting the holistic development of all citizens through the education system; ensuring that all citizens are able to contribute to the Republic’s continuing growth. The Maurice Ile Durable specifies the following targets and indicators for each of the five pillars: achieving the national target of 35% renewable energy by 2025; reducing energy consumption in non-residential and public sector buildings; complying with the environmental sustainability targets of the Millennium Development Goals; reducing ecological footprint by 2020; improving economic competitiveness in the World Economic Forum index; being recognised as a knowledge hub for sustainable development in the region; improving the country's position in the World Poverty Index and Gini coefficient for income inequality.
The MID Energy Policy measures concern: conducting energy audits, increasing green building standards, and developing a Renewable Energy Procurement Framework. Concerning environmental policy measures, this MID focuses on: pollution control and prevention of environmental damage, ensuring sustainable management of water resources, promoting biodiversity conservation and adopting an ecosystem approach to conserve natural asset, implementing a National solid waste management Strategy and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Concerning employment strategies, the MID specifies: encouraging sustainable practices in various sectors to enhance job creation; supporting training programmes for transitioning to green jobs and promote social entrepreneurship. The Education Policy for sustainable development focuses on: promoting healthy and sustainable living styles; increasing access to post-secondary education and vocational training. Equity Policies concern: providing effective support to vulnerable groups; strengthening an environment for gender equality and non-discrimination; conducting surveys to identify equity gaps and promote social entrepreneurship initiatives. The Initiative also include a concept Plan for improving Ocean Economy, based on blue economy, for protecting the marine resources, and for a sustainable use of marine energy.
