Abstract
This Act, divided into five Parts and consisting of 28 articles, provides for the establishment of the Mauritius Food Standards Agency. The Act defines the following objects of the Agency: ensuring a high degree of consumer confidence in the safety and nutritional quality of food produced, processed and trade in the Mauritius; ensuring an effective and transparent framework for the efficient work of the food industry; providing the consumers with adequate information relating to food, in order to enable their choices on food safety and nutritional quality; promoting food trade measures, without reducing safeguards to public health and consumer protection.
The Act specifies the following functions of the Agency: enhancing consistency between domestic and international food regulatory measures; developing standards and procedures for the certification of vegetarian and halal food; recommending maximum limits for food additives, pesticide residues, veterinary drug residues; developing methods of sampling, analysis and examination for the purpose of enforcing the provisions of the Food Act 2022; defining procedures for food safety emergencies; conducting food hazard monitoring and food borne disease surveys; providing analysis and data collection on food fraud and deception. Further matters covered by this Act concern: administration of the Agency; financial provisions and accounts; miscellaneous, including offences.
