Abstract
These Regulations, made by the Minister under section 228 of the Merchant Shipping Act, establish the National Maritime Search and Rescue Organisation (SAR). According to the Regulations, the SAR Organisation ensures a co-ordinated and effective maritime and aeronautical search and rescue service within the provisional maritime search and rescue region of Mauritius, and the implementation and application of the 1979 International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue. Matters covered by the Regulations concern: negotiation of international agreements with Search and Rescue organisations of neighbouring States; specific functions of SAR Organisation, including: co-ordinating its resources to search, assist and effect a rescue operation for survivors of aircraft crashes or forced landings, crew and passengers of vessels in distress, survivors of maritime accidents or incidents; facilitating emergency response, recovery, relief and rehabilitation services; development and implementation of a National Maritime Search and Rescue Plan for the coordination of search and rescue operations.
