Abstract
This National Gender Policy outlines the commitment of the Republic of Mauritius to create an all-inclusive legal, policy and administrative environment that promotes gender equality and equity as the basis for promoting sustainable development and reducing poverty. The main purpose of this Policy is to integrate gender issue into all development planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Therefore, the Policy provides each institution with the basis for the development of targeted gender policies to be implemented at sectoral and institutional levels. The Policy analyses gender mainstreaming in several thematic and sectoral areas, including: legislation, education and training, governance, employment, health and well-being, environmental protection and climate change. Concerning targeted objectives, the Policy focuses on: ensuring equitable participation and representation of men and women in governance, in both public and private sector; eliminating and mitigating all forms of gender-based violence; providing preferential treatment in Government procurement to women, youth and persons with disabilities.
