Abstract
This Act grants powers to the Director of the Medical and Health Department to declare any (private) land near to inland waters to be a reserve. The Director may also declare, by Notice published in the Gazette, any area of Mauritius to be a special area. The Act further grants powers to the Conservator of Forests to require owners of land of reserves in special areas to take measures to cut down vegetation on his or her land along inland waters. The aim of the creation of river reserves is to prevent the spreading of malaria. The Act prescribes that planting of trees along rivers shall be done only with the permission of the Conservator of Forests. Some other measures and restrictions are prescribed for the protection of reserves in general.
