Abstract
This Updated Nationally Determined Contribution reflects the Mauritius’ commitments to combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, through mitigation and adaptation strategies and measures, in which the Government of Mauritius has committed since the ratification of the Paris Agreement. The mitigation measures concern include sector specific mitigation targets for energy, transport, waste and industrial processes and product use, agriculture, land use and forestry. Adaptation measures focus on the potential of nature-based solutions and concern integrated approach in fisheries management, coastal zone conservation, protection of terrestrial and marine biodiversity, tourism, enhancement of disaster preparedness, preservation of ecosystem functions.
Targeted measures concern: adoption of smart agricultural practices, as natural farming systems and agro-forestry; promotion of efficient irrigation techniques; massive planting of trees, forest restoration initiatives; reduction of the use of fossil energy-based fertilisers; improving feed conversion efficiency and better manure management; improvement of management of fishing capacity, feed and fertilisers for aquaculture; mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions during the fishing and production stages and throughout the entire value chain; increasing energy efficiency through the sustainable use of water resources and the use of hydropower and other aquatic-based energy systems; improving energy efficiency and energy conservation, the use of renewable energy sources, waste management programmes, and wastewater treatment; assessment and monitoring of blue carbon in coastal and marine ecosystems; restoration of terrestrial forests and creation of new endemic ones; coral reef rehabilitation; cross-sectoral interventions for sustainable development and poverty eradication.
