Abstract
This Act provides for the protection of fauna and flora in Mauritius and related matters such as administration of wildlife resources and the creation of nature reserves.
The Act consist of 34 sections divided into 8 Parts: Preliminary (I); The Wildlife and National Parks Advisory Council (II); The National Parks and Conservation Service (III); National Parks and other Reserves (IV); Protection of fauna and flora (V); Financial provisions and accounts (VI); Offences, penalties and powers (VII); Miscellaneous (VIII).
There is established, for the purposes of this Act, a Wildlife and National Parks Advisory Council (sect. 3). The Advisory Council shall advise the Minister on matters relating to wildlife. There shall be a National Parks and Conservation Service that shall consist of such scientific, technical, administrative and other staff as may be appointed to carry out duties under this Act (sect. 8). The Service shall be controlled administratively by the Director of National Parks and Conservation Service, whose functions are outlined in section 10. The President may, by Proclamation, declare any State land, nature reserve, Pas Géométriques, or other land to be a national park or other reserve, subject to conditions laid down in section 11. The Minister may declare, under section 12, Buffer Zones for reserved lands. Reserved lands and Buffer Zones shall be managed in accordance with management plans prepared by the Director pursuant to section 13. Section 15 concerns grant of leases to use or occupy reserved land. Chapter five provides for hunting of wild animals, trade in prescribed wildlife, game licences, use of gear, etc. No living animal, other than livestock or fish, shall be introduced into Mauritius without a permit issued by the authorized officer (sect. 23). Section 24 restricts the catch and sale of camarons and shrimps. There is established for the purposes of this Act a National Parks and Conservation Fund (sect. 25).
