National Multi-sectoral Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases in Maldives (2023- 2031).

This action plan provides for a comprehensive strategy to address the growing issue of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in the Maldives. NCDs, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes, have emerged as a significant public health challenge globally. This has devastating consequence on financial and socioeconomic status of citizens and further strains the healthcare systems and impacts the national development.
The key risk factors and the socio-economic conditions that lead to NCDs are largely outside the purview of the health sector, therefore requiring a multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral action at every level in the implementation of this action plan. The vision, goals and guiding principles are laid down. The action plan provides for four specific strategic priority objectives: Strategic Objective 1: Governance; Strategic Objective 2: Health promotion and risk factor reduction; Strategic Objective 3: Health systems strengthening for early detection and management of NCDs and their risk factors; and Strategic Objective 4: NCD Surveillance, monitoring and evaluation and research. Each of these strategic objectives further contain sub-objectives, activities and sub-activities. The Health Protection Agency is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the actions and targets laid down in this action plan.
