Abstract
The National Water and Sewerage Policy of Maldives, 2026, is a comprehensive strategic framework aimed at addressing key challenges and opportunities in the water and sewerage sector. The vision of the Policy is to ensure universal access to safe drinking water and improved sewerage services, while fostering sustainable management and conservation of natural freshwater resources. The primary objective of the Policy is to develop tools for the effective management of water and sewerage sectors, and facilitating informed decision-making and guiding sectoral development comprehensively.
The Policy lays down six Policy Goals: 1. Ensure sustainable, affordable and universal access to safe drinking water and improved sewerage services; Protect, conserve and manage natural fresh water resources; 3. Promote innovative technologies and tools for sustainable management of natural fresh water resources, wastewater, water supply and sewerage services; 4. Promote research on natural freshwater resources, wastewater, water supply and sewerage services; 5. Strengthen human resource capacity and promote social equity in water, wastewater and sewerage sector; 6. Strengthen advocacy and awareness in water, wastewater and sewerage sector. Each goal has a policy objective and the related strategies for achieving the respective goals.
