Abstract
The Antimicrobial Resistance Strategy 2017 - 2022 is a national multi-sectoral strategy of Malawi. Its main objectives are improved awareness and understanding of antimicrobial resistance through effective communication, education and training; improved knowledge and evidence of AMR through research and surveillance; reduced incidence of infection through effective sanitation, hygiene and prevention measures; ensure sustainable investment through research and development; and optimal use of antimicrobials medicines in human and animal health and agriculture.
In particular, the Strategy provides to increase national awareness on antimicrobial resistance; to impart knowledge on AMR and related topics for human and animal health, agriculture and environmental professionals through pre-service training; to improve knowledge of AMR and related topics for human and animal health, agriculture & environmental professionals through in-service training; to impart knowledge on AMR and related topics through formal education system at primary and secondary school level; to strengthen the national AMR surveillance system; to identify key stakeholders and resources in AMR research; to develop and incorporate AMR research priorities into the National (Health) Research Agenda; to prevent and control infection at national level; to prevent and control infection at community level; to prevent and control infection at health care and animal health settings; to prevent and control infection in agriculture; to reduce impacts of AMR on the environment; to ensure uninterrupted access to high-quality antimicrobial medicines; to improve appropriate use of antimicrobials in health systems; to develop an economic case for investment that addresses the country’s AMR needs; to develop an effective mechanism for a sustainable AMR implementation; to identify operational research priorities for participation in international collaborative research to support the development of new medicines, diagnostic tools and vaccines; to identify operational research priorities for participation in international collaborative research to support the development of new medicines, diagnostic tools and vaccines; and to strengthen national collaboration to address AMR containment in disease control programs.
