Abstract
These Regulations implement provisions of the Fisheries Conservation and Management Act, 1997.
The text consists of 51 articles divided into 13 Parts: Preliminary (I); Administration (II); General provisions relating to registrations, licences and permits (III); Registration of local fishing vessel (IV); Local fishing licences (V); Foreign fishing licences (VI); Cooperation by fishing vessels with Government authorities (VII); Stowage of gear, identification marks and protection of fixed gear (VIII); Conservation measures (IX); Aquaculture (X); Landing and sampling of fish and fishing returns (XI); Enforcement (XII); Miscellaneous (XIII).
Part II concerns identity cards for fisheries protection officers. Articles 4 and 5 of Part III provide for application for licences and registration of local fishing vessels. Article 11 regulates the registration of local fishing vessels by the Director. There shall be the following categories of local fishing vessels: (a) commercial fishing licence; (b) sport fishing licence; (c) subsistence fishing licence. Part IV provide for granting, conditions, period of validity, etc. of such licences. Part IX prescribes measures for the conservation of fish stock such as restrictions on mesh, mouth size and other characteristics of gear, restrictions on the use of gear in certain waters and during certain hours, size limits for fish and closed seasons. Article 38 concerns requirements for aquaculture permits. Fish caught with a licence shall be landed in such places as the Director may prescribe in the Official Gazette.
