Abstract
The National Implementation Plan (NIP) for the management of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs 2019-2023 (2019 NIP) reviews and update the 2005 NIP in compliance with Article 7 of the Stockholm Convention taking into consideration the amendments to the Convention or its annexes, including the addition of chemicals to Annexes A, B or C. The 2019 NIP has been prepared based on the assessment and inventories of POPs, thereafter strategies were identified for effective management of POPs in Malawi to protect human health and the environment from their deleterious effects. The 2019 NIP also included an assessment of various legislation. The 2019 NIP to ensure continuity adopts the same strategies of the 2015 NIP and assesses the progress made in each strategy. These strategies included: a) Update, review and harmonization of existing legislation and policies dealing with POPs; b) Develop new regulations specific to POPs; c) Strengthen monitoring and enforcement mechanisms. The implementation of this plan will continue to be spearheaded by the National Chemicals Committee (NCC).
