Abstract
The National Multisector Nutrition Strategic Plan 2025–2030 sets out Malawi’s framework for addressing malnutrition and promoting optimal nutrition as a cornerstone of human capital development under the Malawi 2063 agenda. The Plan responds to persistent challenges such as undernutrition, overnutrition, and micronutrient deficiencies, while integrating emerging issues like climate change, food systems transformation, and nutrition-related non-communicable diseases. The strategy identifies six priority objectives: preventing malnutrition across all demographic groups; advocating for healthy diets within sustainable food systems; enhancing social and behavioral change interventions; treating and managing nutrition-related disorders; strengthening nutrition interventions during emergencies; and creating an enabling environment for effective implementation. It promotes high-impact interventions including optimal maternal and child feeding practices, micronutrient supplementation, dietary diversification, and food fortification, alongside measures to improve WASH, school health, and social protection programs. Institutional arrangements assign oversight to the Department of Nutrition, supported by sector ministries and local councils, with defined roles for academia, development partners, and private actors. The Plan incorporates governance reforms, capacity building, legal enforcement, and resource mobilization to ensure sustainability. Monitoring and evaluation frameworks, research agendas, and surveillance systems are embedded to track progress and accountability. Ultimately, the strategy aims to reduce stunting, anemia, and low birth weight, increase exclusive breastfeeding, and curb overweight and obesity, contributing to improved health, resilience, and socio-economic development. It underscores inclusivity, gender equity, and community empowerment as essential drivers for achieving national nutrition goals.
