Abstract
The Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (MyAP-AMR) 2022-2026 is a nationwide, multisectoral strategy designed to (i) ensure the continuity of the program initiated with the first National Action Plan (NAP) 2017-2021, building on its progress and the current situational analysis of the country; (ii) present coordinated activities with expanded efforts into previously underemphasized areas, such as the environment, agriculture, and plant health; (iii) enhance a comprehensive One Health approach to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) effectively, guiding all stakeholders in mitigating its burden and impact through concrete deliverables; (iv) establish a sustainable antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) program in both public and private healthcare facilities, as well as in the animal health sector. The Plan emphasizes that the fight against AMR, including antimicrobial use (AMU) and related initiatives, must be communicated widely. This includes reaching livestock industry players, stakeholders, politicians, leaders, civil society, consumers, and the general public to create broad awareness, gain support, and foster behavioral changes that support initiatives against AMR.
The MyAP-AMR 2022 - 2026 aims to (1) strengthen awareness and understanding of AMR, (2) enhance National One Health Surveillance and Research Efforts, (3) reduce the transmission of infection and disease, and (4) optimize antimicrobial use across relevant sectors. To raise AMR awareness, the program targets diverse stakeholders, including political figures, the public, and students, using various dissemination methods such as media and AMR ambassadors. It provides comprehensive AMR information and evaluates the effectiveness of campaigns and training. A national surveillance program, adopting a One Health approach, tracks resistant bacteria spread among humans, animals, and the environment. Strengthening laboratory capacity and conducting research are crucial for data accuracy and developing AMR strategies. Effective Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) programs at all levels help detect threats, prevent transmission, and respond to outbreaks. These programs, along with improved Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) practices, immunization, and agricultural biosecurity, are essential to limit the spread of resistant microorganisms. Misuse and overuse of antimicrobials are addressed by regulating their distribution and use through legislation and surveillance programs. The Plan emphasizes the importance of developing and updating treatment guidelines and responsible antimicrobial use in animal husbandry. An antimicrobial stewardship program integrated into healthcare accreditation standards promotes judicious antimicrobial use, involving a multidisciplinary approach to enhance patient safety and treatment outcomes.
