Abstract
This National Nutrition Policy is a nationwide sectoral document aiming at ensuring the nutritional well-being and enabling the people to have access to adequate, nutritious, safe and quality food and to the right information and support to practice healthy eating. It represents the commitment of the Government to eliminate or reduce starvation, widespread undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies which hinder progress in human and social development. Therefore, a comprehensive nutrition policy would systematically address the optimum nutrition from birth through childhood, adolescence, and adulthood right up to old age. The Policy has 3 objectives. They are (1) enhance and maintain nutritional well-being for all; (2) ensure household food security for all.; (3) strengthen inter and intra sectoral linkages in the development and implementation of all nutrition and related activities. To achieve the aforementioned objectives, the Policy adopts the following strategies (i) incorporating nutritional objectives, considerations and components into national developmental policies and programs; (ii) ensuring continuous access to adequate, nutritious, safe and quality foods, especially to the socio-economically deprived; (iii) ensuring access to nutrition information and education as well as resources and opportunities to make informed decisions on healthy food choices; (iv) preventing and controlling nutritional deficiencies, excesses, and diet-related non-communicable chronic diseases; (v) improving care for the nutritionally vulnerable groups; (vi) promoting optimal infant and young child feeding practices; (vii) promoting healthy eating and active living for all.; (viii) protecting consumers through improved food quality and safety.; (ix) ensuring that nutrition and dietetics are practiced by trained professionals; (x) strengthening institutional capacity; (xi) assessment and monitoring of the national nutrition situation; (xii) promoting research and development. The implementation of the National Nutrition Policy of Malaysia is under the jurisdiction of the National Food and Nutrition Safety Council chaired by the Minister of Health.
