Abstract
This second National Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Shark or NPOA-Shark is a nationwide sectoral document and an updated version of the first Plan developed in 2006 and aims at renewing the commitment (i) to the continuous improvement of shark (including all cartilaginous fishes, comprising sharks, skates, rays, and chimeras) conservation and management measures and their long-term sustainable use, as well as (ii) to the principles of international fisheries instruments aimed at achieving sustainable fisheries. The successful outcome of this plan will be the sustainable exploitation of sharks and rays and the enhancement of the populations of those species that are endangered or threatened. In order to achieve the aforementioned objectives, the following seven action plans have been proposed (1) improvement of data collection through scientific methodology; (2) rectifying the negative perception on sharks and rays through public awareness programs and consultations with stakeholders; (3) intensifying capacity building through training courses and participation in conferences, seminars, workshops and proper mentoring by good senior scientists; (4) strengthening management and conservation using better technologies and informed decision making; (5) strengthening law and enforcement including the management of freshwater sharks and rays; (6) comprehensive and coordinated Research; and (7) securing funding through an efficient mechanism to facilitate faster transfer of research funds especially from international donors. The actions are classified on their priority rate, from High (within one year) to Medium (within 2-3 years) up to Low (4 years).
