Abstract
This Renewable Energy Policy is a nationwide sectoral document aiming to enhance the utilization of indigenous renewable energy resources to contribute towards national electricity supply security and sustainable socio-economic development. The five strategic objectives set out by the document are (1) to increase RE contribution in the national power generation mix; (2) to facilitate the growth of the RE industry; (3) to ensure reasonable RE generation costs; (4) to conserve the environment for future generation; and (5) to enhance awareness on the role and importance of RE. To achieve these strategic objective the country shall have to implement the following strategies (i) to introduce appropriate regulatory framework which would address market failures and provides incentives for firms to enter into the RE generation market; (ii) provide conducive environments for RE businesses encompassing the provision of fiscal incentives and indirect assistance in the form of reducing transaction costs and providing assistance to SMEs to participate in the RE business, in addition to the feed-in tariff that provides a stimulus for people to enter the RE power generation sector; (iii) intensify human capital development to support the emerging RE Industries, being RE a new technology in Malaysia; (iv) enhance RE research and development to lead to innovative products and services that can accelerate the growth of the RE industry and make the technology cheaper and easier to use; (v) design and implement RE advocacy Programs tailored with specific messages for specific audiences and increase the awareness of all stakeholders of the benefits and advantages of utilizing RE and participation in RE businesses.
