Abstract
This Strategic Plan considers agriculture as one of the backbone of Malaysia’s economic development and therefore describes the Malaysian government’s aspiration to transform its agriculture into a dynamic and progressive sector. The vision of this Strategic Plan is the creation of a competitive agricultural sector, ensuring a safe and quality production, environmentally friendly and export oriented. The mission of the Strategic Plan aims at providing quality and effective services to agricultural entrepreneurs, through the application and transfer of the latest technology and good practices, and the agricultural regulatory services, in order to achieve the following objectives: increasing national production; protecting the national agriculture from the threats of pests and diseases; maintaining the quality and safety of the food; ensuring the development of the country; improving plant protection programmes and plant biosecurity services; preserving plant genetic resources from extinction.
The Strategic Plan focuses on the following measures and projects: selected fruits replanting; assistance projects to increase production of vegetables; replacement of tobacco cultivation with food crops; improvement of high-tech production methods, such as fertigation, for food crops production; coconut plant industry development, with production of quality seeds; soil restoration and drainage system upgrading; increasing mushroom production; improvement of natural honey production; coffee industry development, using hybrid and selected varieties; development of new organic production areas and increasing the productivity of the existing ones; urban agriculture development project, improving irrigation techniques; plant seed production through the supply of the following inputs: chemical fertilisers, herbicides and insecticides; flower and ornamental plants production; plant surveillance and monitoring through the National agrofood plant pest management project; development of geospatial plant and land inventory, in order to improve accuracy of food crop area identification and the mapping of land; clearing abandoned land and reducing wasteland.
