Abstract
This updated version of the First Nationally Determined Contribution to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, covering the period 2020-2025, presents the Mozambique vision, commitment and related actions to address global climate change through the implementation of the adaptation, mitigation and cross-cutting measures for greenhouse gas emissions reduction. The Contribution defines measures and interventions in the following core sectors: agriculture and fisheries; water resources and sanitation; food security and nutrition; health; biodiversity; forestry; social security; infrastructure and urban areas; tourism and coastal zones; livestock and sustainable land use; waste management; energy security and sustainability of industries. The Contribution analyses the vulnerability of the country and provides an overview of the extreme events, such as floods, droughts, cyclones and natural disasters, and their impacts on agriculture, water and energy sectors, with deprivation of water supply sources for human consumption, livestock watering and irrigation.
The Contributions define the following strategic actions and respective measures to enforce climate resilience in the communities: strengthening the early warning system; increasing climate risk preparedness and response capacity; improving technologies for agricultural production, agroforestry systems, natural resource management, conservation agriculture, irrigation, reduction of post-harvest losses; encouraging seed production and conservation; transition to a resilient blue economy; promotion of renewable energy use for irrigation; increasing the resilience of fisheries through implementation of protective measures for seaweed, seagrass, corals; increasing water resources management capacity; construction of multi-purpose water supply systems using clean energy sources; conservation of rainwater in excavated and underground reservoirs; reduction of existing waste in the urban water distribution network; rehabilitation of deforested areas for pasture creation, agriculture practice, forest resources exploitation; ensuring biodiversity protection; mapping of regions prone to soil erosion.
