Abstract
The present Act introduces amendments to the Svalbard Environmental Protection Act on the protection of polar bears, cleaning-up after business operations, supervision of environmental authorities, the duty to provide information on potential environmental harmful activities, inspections, and offences and penalties. The Act prohibits using a ship's whistle, discharging firearms, or causing other loud noises closer than one nautical mile from a bird cliff, or to use unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) closer than 500 meters from a bird cliff. I also prohibits unnecessarily disturbing, attracting, or pursuing polar bears. If a business is shut down or ceases operations, the operator must take the necessary measures to prevent environmental damage.
