Regulation No. 1 on crab fishing.

This Regulation of the Government of Greenland governs crab fishing (Chionoecetes opilio) in Greenland’s fisheries territory. It requires a license from the Department of Fisheries and Hunting for commercial fishing, limited to vessels under 75 BRT/120 BT and without transshipment permits. Licenses may be issued for up to three management areas per vessel, across 8 of 12 designated zones (categories 1–3), while exploratory fishing may be licensed in the 4 category 4 areas, with annual quotas set for categories 1–3. Commercial crab fishing is prohibited in West Greenland north of Maniitsoq-Kangaamiut between 1 January and 31 March, and must be stopped if more than 20% of the catch is unsuitable and must be released. Only traps (tejner) are permitted, with minimum mesh sizes, biodegradable escape windows required from 2023, and storage at sea prohibited when not in use. Non-commercial fishing for personal consumption is allowed for Greenland residents (Danish citizens or foreign residents with at least two years of residence), limited to three traps and subject to the same technical rules. Violations can lead to fines and confiscation, with companies also held criminally liable, and fines going to the Treasury.
