Regulation No. 11 on special rules for the Water Protection Zone at Qaqortoq.
Type of law
Regulation
Abstract
This Regulation of the Government of Greenland establishes special rules for the water protection zone around Qaqortoq’s lake Tasersuaq, dividing it into four zones with specific restrictions to safeguard drinking water. Zone 0 (Annex 1), a 30-meter strip along the lakeshore, prohibits new construction and requires wastewater discharge to be eliminated by 2020, though existing buildings may be carefully maintained or extended, with strict monitoring of oil tanks. Zone 1 (Annex 1), mainly residential, allows housing, offices, shops, institutions, and motorized vehicles, but excludes industrial activities, also requiring wastewater controls and safe oil storage. Zone 2 (Annex 1), an industrial and commercial area, permits construction, heavy industry, and motorized use until the end of 2020, after which such activities may only continue if proper drainage routes divert surface water away from Tasersuaq. Zone 3 (Annex 1 and 2), covering the remaining protection area, is largely recreational, where ski-track preparation with snow machines is permitted under strict conditions, and maintenance of wooden footbridges is allowed with controlled transport of materials. Overall, the regulation balances urban development and economic activities with stringent measures to protect Tasersuaq from pollution, ensuring safe drinking water for Qaqortoq.
