Regulation No. 2 on the possibility of temporarily granting exemptions from the requirements on waste disposal.
Type of law
Regulation
Abstract
This Regulation empowers the government of Greenland (Naalakkersuisut) to temporarily grant exemptions from existing waste disposal rules. It reiterates that all waste must normally be handled at approved facilities and that incineration is only allowed at authorized plants, with municipalities responsible for ensuring proper treatment and preventing unsuitable burning. In exceptional cases — such as when no approved incineration facility is available or operational — the municipality may apply for permission to temporarily conduct open burning or landfilling for up to three months, provided they actively work toward adequate long-term waste management solutions and have an approved waste plan. The government may impose specific conditions on such exemptions, and fines may be issued for violating those terms.
