Regulation No. 59 on salmon fishing.

This Regulation of the Government of Greenland regulates salmon fishing. It applies to non-commercial salmon fishing as well as to reporting in connection with commercial salmon fishing within Greenland’s fishing territory and in the Kapisillit River. Non-commercial fishing requires a valid license issued by Naalakkersuisut (the Greenlandic government) and is subject to an annual national quota and designated start date. Only specific fishing gear is permitted: hooks or a single net of up to 30 meters in length with a minimum mesh size of 140 mm. Multiple nets cannot be linked, and there are geographic restrictions near river mouths. All catches—including zero catches—must be reported immediately via Sullissivik.gl or using a designated form. Commercial fishers must also report all salmon caught (including bycatch) upon arrival at port. Fishing is limited to the area within three nautical miles from the baseline. Special rules apply to the Kapisillit River, where only licensed private fishing is allowed using single-hook rods, with strict bans on other gear types near the river mouth and within connected lakes. Naalakkersuisut determines the quota and season start for this area and may close the fishery or impose catch-and-release rules. Violations of the regulation may result in fines and confiscation under Greenland’s Criminal Code.
