Regulation No. 9 on the Protection of Freshwater Resources and the Abstraction of Freshwater for Drinking Water.
Type of law
Regulation
Abstract
This Greenland Home Rule regulation establishes rules for protecting freshwater resources and controlling their use for drinking water. It defines surface and groundwater, water catchment areas, and public water supply systems, and requires the government to map and assess available resources, set up protection zones, and revise these every two years in consultation with municipalities. Water extraction is only permitted with prior government approval, except for certain existing public supply sources. Municipalities supervise compliance, and violations may lead to fines for individuals or companies. The regulation also provides for appeals to the legislative complaints committee.
