Environmental Protection Agency Law.

The Yobe State Environmental Protection Agency (Agency) is established as a corporate body responsible for protecting the environment in the state. Its main tasks include the collection and disposal of refuse (wet and dry), street cleaning, maintenance of township drainage, enforcement of environmental laws, sanitary inspections of premises including abattoirs, control and abatement of nuisances, and the control of industrial and residential hygiene. The Agency also oversees the control of industrial waste, air and water pollution, prevention of consumption of unhealthy food, and carries out investigations and reporting on infectious diseases. It ensures market sanitation, installation of refuse collection devices, arrest of stray animals, and overall development and protection of the state environment. The Agency collaborates with federal, state, and local governments, NGOs, and research institutions to implement and enforce environmental standards and conduct public investigations on major pollution cases.
The Agency, through its Technical Committee and Local Government Environmental Protection Committees, also advises and assists in technical matters related to the environment. It is empowered to make grants, enter into contracts, collect and disseminate environmental data, and promote training programs. It enforces environmental laws by issuing abatement notices, prosecuting offenders, and imposing fines or imprisonment. The Agency coordinates with the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA) to implement national environmental standards and organize annual environmental reports. Its staff includes Medical and Health Officers who have powers to inspect premises, abate nuisances, condemn unfit food, and enforce health directives, thus ensuring healthy living conditions through strict environmental control measures.
