Kwara State Farmers and Herdsmen (Prevention and Settlement of Disputes) Law no. 5 of 1997.

This Law concerns the following matters: animals, including camels, cows, sheep, goats; commissioner; Committee on farmers and herdsmen; farmer; herdsmen; local committee on farmers and herdsmen. This Law focuses on the establishment, composition and functions of the Committee, including the following tasks: promoting and improving relationship between farmers and herdsmen, advising the government on the creation of grazing reserves and designating watercourses for animal grazing; establishment and functions of local committee including: monitoring the movement of herdsmen and controlling the entry of migrant herdsmen and their animals into defined areas; providing compensation in respect of loss or damage to farm produce or animals; encouraging disputing parties to resolve their differences amicably particularly by facilitating the settlement of disputes between farmers and herdsmen and compensation of any party; enhancing good relationship, mutual understanding and respect between farmers and herdsmen. Further matters covered by this Law include: grazing on farmlands; meeting of the committees; abandoned animals; funds; offences and penalties.
