Abstract
This revised National Health Promotion Policy is a sectoral document aiming to set standards and provide accurate guidance on best practices and what should be done by decision-makers, managers, and service providers of health promotion at various levels. It identifies the relevant human resources necessary to implement health promotion activities effectively and efficiently by expanding the skills base of health promoters to include persons with the minimum required qualifications and skills in line with global best practices. The Policy outlines four broad objectives to improve health in Nigeria (1) Health Equity and Disease Reduction: Focus on promoting health interventions that address social determinants, reduce health inequities, and tackle priority diseases; (2) Support for Healthy Behaviors: Facilitate government efforts to promote and sustain healthy behaviors, lifestyles, and environments through policy support and public awareness; (3) Capacity Building: Enhance human resources and strengthen capacities to effectively deliver health promotion interventions; (4) System Strengthening and Evaluation: Improve systems for implementing, monitoring, and evaluating health promotion activities, ensuring they are evidence-based and well-documented.
Regarding the food and nutrition sector, the document outlines specific measures including (i) enhancing food safety and security at the household, institutional, and community levels; (ii) promoting better food labeling and reducing salt, sugar, and fat content in foods; and (iii) ensuring the safety of food and drugs by reducing the prevalence of counterfeit and substandard products in the market through research, policy development, and enforcement.
