Abstract
This Nigeria Agenda presents the government’s long-term economic transformation blueprint to address the economic and social developmental challenges and transform Nigeria in an upper middle-income country, through a full engagement of all resources, in order to achieve inclusive growth, reduce poverty and unemployment, increase social and economic stability, create a sustainable environment, and reduce global concerns about climate change. The mission of the Nigeria Agenda 2050 provides for implementation of a series of appropriate medium-term plans, and annual budgets for inclusive and sustainable development. The associated core objectives of the Agenda, built on seven pillars, are: establishing a stable and predictable macroeconomic environment for a private sector-led economy, with domestic savings and investment; strengthening institutions and ensuring good governance; transforming Nigeria into a major economy in Africa, playing a leading role in various regional agreements; promoting development opportunities across states to reduce regional economic and social disparities; developing social and human capital; improving environmental and regional development.
These objectives are further elaborated in the chapters of the Agenda dealing with all aspects of the Nigerian economy, through the following targeted actions: promotion of selected export crops; increasing of agro-ecological zones; training of youthful population to transition from subsistence to commercial agriculture; improving irrigated farming opportunities; improvement livestock techniques; increasing artisanal fisheries’ efficiency, and eliminating the smuggling of fish by instituting policies for freshwater, deep sea, and coastal fishing to curb illegal fishing; reducing desertification; revitalising fertilisers production; separation of commercial seeds production from grain production; exploration and assessment of the quantum of minerals deposits; increasing the production capacity of mineral and mining sector; addressing food security and nutrition issues, such as: insufficient food consumption, ignorance of dietary requirements, poor food preservation techniques, children malnutrition; reducing contamination of groundwater and surface water; increasing water resources management, and efficiency in public water corporations activities, in order to improve water supply; ensuring access to safe drinking water; expanding access to sanitation services; improvement of disposal of household and industrial waste; adequate funding of environmental programmes and projects; increasing institutional capacity to manage environmental disasters; promotion of targeted strategies concerning: green economy, circular economy, and climate smart technologies.
