Act No. 55 on protection against infectious diseases.

This Act lays down rules for protecting the population from infectious diseases. Its goal is to prevent the occurrence of infectious diseases and their transmission to the population, and to prevent such diseases from being introduced into Norway or carried from Norway to other countries. The Act shall ensure that health authorities and other authorities implement the necessary infection prevention measures and coordinate their activities.
The Act consists of eight chapters: 1. Introductory provisions; 2. Information for infected persons, exceptions to confidentiality, messages and notifications; 3. Tests and vaccinations; 4. Other infection control measures; 5. Obligations for infected persons - coercive measures; 6. Right to infection control assistance etc.; 7. Administrative bodies and their responsibilities; 8. Penalties, damages, appeals, entry into force, and transitional provisions.
City Councils may reach decisions affecting private or public businesses about cleaning, disinfection, or destructions of objects or premises. Decisions may also concern killing of animals, eradication of rodents and other pests, or other infection sanitation measures.
Infected persons and doctors shall notify health authorities promptly when there are signs that dangerous infectious disease have been caused by environmental contamination, e.g. a disease caused by transmission from drinking water, food or animals. The Food Safety Authority shall also notify health authorities when there is a suspicion or confirmed case of an infectious animal disease that may pose danger to humans or when there is suspicion that an infectious disease is communicated to humans via foodstuffs.
