Abstract
This Decree lays down rules relative to hunting for wildlife animals and fishing for freshwater fishes in Svalbard and Jan Mayen and for the protection of wildlife and fish resources in these two territories. The Decree aims at safeguarding the natural balance in the ecosystems and to protect the biodiversity present on Svalbard and Jan Mayen. "Wildlife" and "freshwater' fish are defined. Only sports fishing and fishing in fjords with specified gear shall be allowed. The Decree specifies also regulatory powers of the Department of the Environment. Hunting and fishing shall be prohibited in specified periods.
