Regulation No. 175 on the keeping of pigs.

This Regulation establishes a detailed legal framework to ensure animal welfare in pig farming, with the central aim of promoting good health, well-being, and respect for pigs’ natural behaviour. It applies to all commercial pig production and requires that animals be protected from unnecessary stress, pain, and suffering. The regulation places strong emphasis on appropriate housing design, hygiene, ventilation, lighting, and fire safety, as well as on the competence of those handling animals. It also restricts invasive procedures, prohibits routine fixation, and mandates that pigs be kept in conditions that allow movement, social interaction, and species-specific behaviour such as rooting.
More specific provisions govern feeding, care, and housing conditions for different categories of pigs, including piglets, sows, and boars. Pigs must have constant access to clean water, appropriate feed, and enrichment materials like straw to support natural behaviours. The regulation sets minimum space requirements, mandates group housing for sows during most of their reproductive cycle, and regulates practices such as weaning and medical interventions. It also includes requirements for daily supervision, disease prevention, and special care for sick or injured animals. Administrative provisions require registration of animal holdings, participation in welfare programmes, and oversight by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, ensuring enforcement and compliance.
