Governed by a board of seven members appointed by the Ministry of Climate and Environment, the institute is led by a director appointed for a six-year term. The director manages daily operations and represents Norway in the World Meteorological Organization. The institute is a government agency with special authorizations allowing administrative and financial flexibility, including exemptions from certain state budgeting rules.
