Abstract
This Regulation of the Department of Food and Fisheries establishes aquaculture production areas to promote the profitability and competitiveness of aquaculture industry within the framework of environmentally sustainable development and to contribute to coastal zone development. The Regulation indicated specific production areas. For permits for production in areas that are not indicated, the Fisheries Directorate shall start a production areas placement process. Permits may be associated with more than one area. If the operator does not indicate an area where he or she wishes to operate, the Directorate shall indicate an area, taking into account environmental conditions. Movement to another area requires a new permit. The Regulation also concerns the establishment of the production capacity of a production area. Production capacity in aquaculture production areas is established in accordance with the area's environmental sustainability. One of the environmental indicators is the presence of salmon lice affecting wild salmon. In the case of acceptable environmental impact in a production area, the Department may, by Order, announce a tender for new permits and the increase of production capacity for existing permits in the production area. In certain circumstances, a permit may be granted independent of the environmental status of the (proposed) production area.
