Abstract
The Gaur(Bos gaurus) is listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and included in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The species is also listed as protected species by National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1973 of Nepal. The goal of this Conservation Action Plan of Gaur for Nepal (2020-2024) is: Gaur’s population maintained and its habitat managed in Nepal.
To achieve the goal, five objectives have been set up: 1. Conserve and maintain Gaur population; 2. Enhance understanding and knowledge on conservation status, ecology and habitat dynamics of Gaur; 3. Protect and manage the Gaur habitats; 4. Strengthen and extend community-based Gaur conservation interventions; and 5. Strengthen cooperation and coordination on Gaur at national and international level. Major outcomes outlined in the Plan include: Capacity of and facility to law enforcement agencies enhanced; Zero poaching of Gaur; Secure Gaur population from disease; Database on Gaur distribution, population, occupancy and its habitat dynamics enhanced; Understanding of habitat, ecological and behavioral aspects of Gaur improved; Existing and potential anthropogenic threats including climate change on Gaur conservation assessed; Ethnic, religious, traditional belief and value system of Gaur assessed; Habitat contiguity maintained inside and outside the protected areas; Degraded habitat restored within and outside of protected areas; Additional potential habitat protected under appropriate conservation measures and translocate Gaur there in; Local community sensitized, trained and involved in Gaur conservation; Gaur based tourism is taken in place; Increased collaboration for Gaur conservation at local, state and national level. level; etc.
