Abstract
This NDC is Nepal’s enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement for the period 2021-2030. The mitigation component of the NDC comprises of activity-based and policy targets in key sectors such as Energy; Industrial Processes and Product Use; Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use; and Waste. The targets are conditional upon international support.
The targets in Energy sector include expansion of clean energy generation and by 2030, ensure 15% of the total energy demand is supplied from clean energy sources. The targets include increase in electric stoves for primary cooking as well as installing additional household and large scale biogas plants. In Forestry, the target is to maintain 45% of the total area of the country under forest cover and managing them sustainably, including through the use of funding from REDD+ initiatives. Activities in Waste include wastewater treatment before being discharged and management of faecal sludge. In Agriculture, targets include increasing soil organic matter content and organic fertilizer production plants. Relevant targets for Tourism and Gender Equality and Social Inclusion have also been indicated.
The NDC informs that an adaptation plan will be submitted covering the climate-sensitive sectors including Agriculture and Food Security; Forests, Biodiversity and Watershed Conservation; Water Resources and Energy; Drinking Water and Sanitation; and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management. Key policies will include preparation and implementation of climate-resilient and gender-responsive adaptation plans; setting up institutional mechanisms relating to climate change; climate change-related education in schools; increasing access to the basic water supply; and strengthening Agro-Meteorological Information System. The NDC also states that adaptation measures based on circular economy and sustainable resource use will be developed and implemented.
