Abstract
The Sustainable Development Agenda (Agenda) is a guiding document aiming to influence national-level planning and policies. It lays down Nepal’s goals and aspirations in a coherent framework of priorities, that principally set out to secure higher incomes, create good institutions, establish peace, nurture the nation's health and education, and preserve its environmental integrity. Chapter 1 contains an introduction to the Agenda and an overview. Chapter 2 defines the term sustainable development in the national context. Chapter 3 discusses the opportunities and constraints. Chapter 4 lays down the broad goals that Nepal aspires to achieve over a 15 year time frame.
Chapter 5 described the current situation and formulates objectives to meet the goals under the following topics: 1. Income; 2. Health, Population and Settlements; 3. Forests, Ecosystems and Biodiversity; 4. Education; 5. Institutions and Infrastructure; and 6. Peace and Security. Within these broad topics, the future agenda is provided for domains such as agriculture and forestry, industry and trade, energy and hydropower, air quality, water supply, solid waste management, food security, climate change, and disasters. Chapter 6 contains various policies, new and existing, for each of the topics discussed in chapter 5. Chapter 7 provides for the implementation plan and includes monitoring and evaluation, community participation, institutional arrangement, and international cooperation.
