Abstract
Nauru’s National Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS) 2019–2030 outlines a national vision of “Partnerships for Quality of Life” and aligns the country’s development with global frameworks like the UN 2030 Agenda, the SAMOA Pathway, and the Paris Agreement. It defines seven key development goals, including governance, education, health, infrastructure, economic diversification, climate resilience, and food production, while reflecting economic challenges such as reliance on phosphate mining and external revenues. The strategy organizes actions across four sectors, economy, social and community, infrastructure, and cross-cutting themes, with a focus on strengthening governance, building capacity, and enabling private investment.
It prioritizes infrastructure improvements such as renewable energy, water supply, ports, waste management, and communications, while identifying climate change as the greatest threat and promoting resilience measures like land rehabilitation and relocation to higher ground. Financing is to be supported through the Nauru Trust Fund, external aid, climate finance, and donor partnerships. Implementation is guided by medium-term frameworks, institutional coordination, and monitoring systems, while addressing challenges such as limited capacity, land tenure issues, and the need for better transparency and donor coordination.
