Abstract
Nauru’s Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan is a national strategy with a multi-sectoral approach. Its vision is to protect, conserve and sustainably manage Nauru’s biological and genetic resources for the purpose of securing a future where individual, community, business and government partnerships contribute to a sustainable quality of life for all Nauruans. The Strategy outlines the state of Nauru’s biological resources and actions to control their degradation and achieve sustainable development
Food safety will be assisted through programs for agrodiversity such as development of new and existing programs that promote the production of nutritional food, for example breadfruit, and the increase and improvement of inspection criteria on the quality and health aspects of both locally produced and imported food.
The sectors of agriculture, forestry and fisheries will become more productive and sustainable through integration of biodiversity and concepts of conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity into national, sectoral and cross-sectoral plans and policies. To this end, biodiversity will be mainstreamed in the next National Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS) and issues such as financing biodiversity and ensuring biodiversity considerations will be effectively incorporated in the Government’s development policies. New legislation will be also be developed and effectively enforced, and multi-sectoral teams of scientists and experts will be set up to conduct biological studies and undertake monitoring programmes on biodiversity.
Special attention will be paid to Ecosystems Management which will enable sustainable use of biodiversity, control the spread of alien introduced species, and increase native biodiversity which will boost the natural basis of the country’s developments. Action plans will be designed to empower Communities through the full participation of all different target groups to conserve and sustainably manage biodiversity under customary resource tenure. Another goal of the strategy is to establish appropriate national measures to effectively access genetic resources and carry out fair and equitable sharing of benefits from the use of these resources. the National Environmental Coordinating Committee will oversee the implementation of the NBSAP. It will be chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Environment, and will include members from line ministries and leading NGOs. A NBSAP Implementing Monitoring Matrix is also included.
