Abstract
This Intended Nationally Determined Contributions is a nationwide sectoral document aiming at illustrating the Niue commitment to combat climate change by reducing GHG emissions, in particular in the energy sector. Although the country already emits a low rate of emissions, it is possible through technological and behavioral means lower them, also given its collateral benefits including: decreased national expenditure associated with the escalating costs of importing fossil fuels; improved energy security; improved local air quality; support for Niue as an eco-tourism destination and encouraging sustainable development in the Pacific region.
Mitigation measures are envisaged in the following sectors (i) Electricity generation, aiming to achieve the goals included in the Niue Strategic Energy Road Map, Niue Energy Policy, and Niue National Strategic Plan to pursue the following five key motivations: reduced dependence on fossil fuels, improved energy efficiency, more sustainable and cleaner energy, improved cost-effectiveness of energy services, and attract funding for the sector development; (ii) Transport; and (iii) Land Use Change and Forestry.
