Abstract
Aotearoa New Zealand's First National Adaptation Plan (NAP) is a strategic framework aimed at addressing the challenges posed by climate change from 2022 to 2028. The plan emphasizes the importance of adapting to climate impacts through a collaborative approach that includes various stakeholders, particularly Māori communities, to ensure equity and inclusivity in decision making processes. The NAP outlines several key actions and strategies designed to enhance resilience across different sectors and communities. It focuses on enabling better risk informed decisions, which is crucial for managing the uncertainties associated with climate change. By assessing risks and vulnerabilities, the plan aims to guide investments and policies that will mitigate adverse effects on the environment, economy, and society. The document is structured into chapters that detail the overarching strategy for adaptation, the specific actions to be taken, and the mechanisms for implementation. It highlights the need for ongoing engagement and partnership among government agencies, local authorities, businesses, and communities to foster a unified response to climate challenges.
In Chapter 6 the Government objectives to support a resilient natural environment include: ensuring healthy and connected ecosystems where biodiversity thrives (1), enhancing biosecurity to reduce the spread of pests and diseases (2), and promoting nature-based solutions to build resilience (3). These objectives aim to strengthen biodiversity, improve ecosystem health, and reduce human pressures so that the natural environment can better respond to climate impacts. By supporting intact and connected ecosystems, robust biosecurity measures, and nature-based adaptation strategies, the plan seeks to safeguard New Zealand’s environment against climate risks. The text is designed in 11 Chapters as follow: Adapting to climate change: Our long-term strategy (1); Our first national adaptation plan 2022-28 (2); Enabling better risk-informed decisions (3); Driving climate-resilient development in the right locations (4); Adaptation options including managed retreat (5); Natural environment (6); Homes, buildings and places (7); Infrastructure (8); Communities (9); Economy and financial system (10); and Implementing the plan (11).
