Abstract
The Act plays a crucial role in regulating the energy industry and promoting transparency and accountability among gas retailers. By outlining clear requirements and penalties for non-compliance, the Act aims to protect consumers and uphold the standards of the energy sector in New Zealand. The Act provides for the imposition of levies on gas retailers, the powers of the Secretary to inspect and obtain information, and the consequences for providing false or misleading information in response to notices under the Act. The Act requires the gas retailers to submit returns to the Secretary detailing the energy content of piped gas sold and to pay levies based on this information. The Act consists of 39 Articles and 5 Schedules.
