Abstract
This Act provides for the regulation, supply and use of gas in New Zealand and for the regulation of the gas industry.
The Act defines the functions and powers of the Secretary which include the safe supply and use of gas; inspection of distribution systems, gas installations, or gas appliances; inquiries into accidents that involve the production, conversion, supply, distribution or use of gas and that may cause harm to persons or cause significant property damage; and the issuance of gas codes of practice.
The Act further provides for: powers and duties of gas operators and other owners of gas fittings; governance of the gas industry; regulation making powers of the Governor-General related to requirements for safety management systems and to information disclosure; offences; etc.

Entry into force notes
This Act enters into force on 1 April 1993 except for Part 1, Part 4 and sections 54, 55, and 60 which enter into force on the day after the date this Act receives the Royal assent.
