Abstract
The National Policy Statement aims to guide local authorities in creating sustainable urban environments that accommodate growth while addressing environmental concerns and ensuring accessibility for all residents. It serves as a framework for responsive planning and development, ensuring that urban areas can adapt to changing demands and challenges. The document also highlights the importance of accessibility, supporting various business sectors, and minimizing adverse impacts on land and development markets while promoting reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and resilience to climate change. In cases where local authorities identify insufficient development capacity, they must notify the Minister for the Environment and promptly amend relevant planning documents to increase capacity. The statement also addresses unanticipated or out of sequence developments, urging local authorities to consider significant development capacity that contributes to a well functioning urban environment.
