Abstract
This Act, consisting of 3 Parts and 5 Schedules, aims to restore and protect the health and well-being of the Waikato River, to recognize the vision and strategy for the Waikato River and to recognize the significance of the Waikato River to Ngati Tuwharetoa, Raukawa and Te Arawa River Iwi.
The Act provides for the establishment and grants functions and powers to the Waikato River Authority. The Act also establishes the Waikato River Clean-up Trust.
An Upper Waikato River integrated management plan shall be prepared to achieve an integrated approach between the trusts that prepare the plan to the management of aquatic life, habitats and natural resources within the Waikato River.
The Act further acknowledges and provides a process that may recognize certain customary activities of Ngati Tuwharetoa, Raukawa, and Te Arawa River Iwi and provides co-management arrangements for the Waikato River.
Entry into force notes
Parts 1 and 3 come into force on the day after the date on which this Act receives the Royal assent. The rest of this Act comes into force on a date to be appointed by the Governor-General by an Order in Council made on the advice of the Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations.
