Abstract
This NIP is a nationwide sectoral document aiming at (i) assessing the prevalence of POPs in the Sultanate and issues related to them; (ii) identifying problems associated with POPs; and (iii) to present a clear course of actions and strategies to deal with them, in accordance with national objectives and priorities and in line with Oman’s obligation to the Stockholm Convention. The basic policy on POPs in the present document is to put measures in place for the gradual reduction and eventual elimination of POPs in the environment as well as their hazardous impacts on both the environment and human health. Components of this effort include (i) the rehabilitation of contaminated sites; (ii) prevention of further contamination through the elimination of POPs resulting from human enterprises; (iii) monitoring of other toxic chemicals and ensuring that they are handled in compliance with regulations aimed at protecting the environment, water, and human health; and (iv) promoting the application of Best Available Technology (BAT) and Best Environment Practice and (BEP) principles. The Action Plan deals with (i) POPs Pesticides; (ii) PCBs and Equipment Containing PCBs; (iii) Unintentionally Produced POPs By-products; and (iv) Public Awareness, Information Dissemination and Training.
