Royal Decree No.49/2014 establishing the Public Authority for Mining.

This Decree consisting of 7 articles aims at issuing the system that governs the new Authority for Mining. It establishes that it shall be affiliated to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Article 5 stipulates that the powers and prerogatives of the Directorate General of Mining at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry shall be transferred to the Public Authority for Mining.
The management of the Authority and the organization of its affairs shall be undertaken by the Authority’s Board of Directors. The Authority’s duties will include the following (i) preparing strategies and policies of the basic geological structure of the Sultanate; (ii) reviewing and drafting legislation with the aim of providing organizational structure to encourage the development of the sector; (iii) preparing studies and creating research teams to obtain the needed information for the feasibility of projects as well as to study the prospect for mineral exploitation; and (iv) supervising the activities related to the mining sector in order to achieve optimal exploitation of mining resources and preserve the geological heritage.
