Abstract
The Objectives of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) are: enabling the protection of intellectual property on biodiversity and promoting the use of prior informed consent in the granting and obtaining access to biodiversity and knowledge of biodiversity; ensuring benefits arising out of genetic and ecosystems resources use promote sustainable rural development; genetic and ecosystems to be harnessed for the development of agricultural products to ensure food security; genetic and ecosystems to be harnessed for the development of pharmaceuticals products that support human health.
The following are the main six goals of the NBSAP: sustainable use of the country’s biological diversity; strengthening institutional and human capacity building for biodiversity conservation, management and sustainable use; strengthening partnership and coordination for conserving biodiversity; strengthening protected areas ensuring that terrestrial and marine species are increased; ensuring a equitable sharing of benefits arising out of genetic and ecosystem resources; strengthening research of the biological diversity and the sustainable development of the biological resources. The goals are to be achieved through nine broad programmes prioritized into four different categories of priority, such as: 1) Policy and Legislation; Financial and Technical Resources; and Human Capacities; 2) Access and Benefit Sharing; 3) Research and Information on Biodiversity; and In situ and ex situ Biodiversity Conservation; 4) Measures of Sustainability of Biodiversity Use; and Education and Public Awareness.
